Tobacco-Free Campus

To protect the health of our patients, visitors and employees, The Hospital of Central Connecticut has been completely tobacco-free since November 1, 2009.

Smoking is not to be permitted outside buildings, in parking areas and garages or on any other property owned and operated by the hospital. This includes the New Britain General Campus, Bradley Memorial Campus in Southington and other hospital facilities. Smoking is already prohibited inside all hospital facilities.

“Going completely tobacco-free is a major step toward making our hospital healthier, safer and cleaner for everyone,” said The Hospital of Central Connecticut President and CEO Laurence A. Tanner. “It’s also an important part of our mission to improve the overall health and well-being of the people we serve.”

The Hospital of Central Connecticut has joined with other Connecticut hospitals in the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) Clear the Air Initiative, launched last fall. The initiative’s goal was to have all 29 CHA member hospitals completely smoke-free by November 2010.

“We know that smoking is the root cause of many illnesses – all kinds of cancers, heart disease, stroke, vascular disease and many others,” said Steven Hanks, M.D., The Hospital of Central Connecticut's chief medical officer. “We also recognize that nicotine is highly addictive and quitting is difficult. The hospital offers smoking cessation and other wellness programs that can help people make lifestyle changes that can really improve their health and longevity.”

The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers the Quitting Time smoking cessation program, which includes a seven-week group program for adults; a six-week program for teens; individual counseling, and a self-help manual. For information, call 860.224.5433.

Other hospital wellness programs can help people lose weight, exercise and eat more healthfully. For information on these programs, visit our Wellness Programs page or call the Bradley Memorial Campus, 860.276.5099; or the New Britain General Campus, 860.224.5433.
