Hospital's June 3 Pinot & Prevention focuses on heart disease in women

Gina BarrecaOn Wednesday, June 3, The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) Department of Cardiology will host an evening of Pinot & Prevention at the New Britain Museum of American Art where guests will enjoy a dose of laughter and learn about heart disease in women.

The 6:30 to 9 p.m. event will feature humorist Gina Barreca, Ph.D., a writer, speaker and professor, as well as a presentation by HOCC cardiologist Dr. Heather Swales on heart disease in women. Emcee is Sarah Cody of FOX CT TV. Wine and desserts will also be available.

“This is going to be a fun evening to feed your body, mind and soul,” says Swales, director of HOCC’s Women’s Heart Wellness Center. “I encourage women to bring their girlfriends, sisters and daughters so they can share the knowledge they learn about women and heart disease, and laugh together with Gina Barreca while enjoying some treats."

A best-selling author, Barreca has written nine books, including “It’s Not That I’m Bitter: How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Visible Panty Lines and Conquered the World.” Other books are “They Used to Call Me Snow White But I Drifted: Women’s Strategic Use of Humor” and “Babes in Boyland: A Personal History of Coeducation in the Ivy League.” She is a professor of English and Feminist Theory at the University of Connecticut and her weekly columns for The Hartford Courant are now distributed internationally by the Tribune Syndicate. Called “smart and funny” by People magazine and “Very, very funny -- for a woman,” by Dave Barry, Barecca was deemed a “feminist humor maven” by Ms. Magazine. She has also been on 20/20, CNN, NPR and Oprah.
