Hospital staff member receives community service award

New Britain [December 20 2012] - Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) employee Allison Mahon of Marlborough received the hospital’s Loretta Martinelli Community Service Award Dec. 12.

The award is given annually to a dedicated employee who has made a notable contribution to the well-being of the community and displays compassion, integrity and respect for others.

Mahon joined HOCC in March 2012 as H3W coordinator, helping to organize and run a hospital-wide improvement effort that involves teams of employees from every HOCC department.

Her volunteer activities outside the hospital include serving as chairman of the board of directors of Donate Life Connecticut, which seeks to raise awareness of the lifesaving benefits of organ and tissue donation and increase the number of registered donors. Mahon became involved in that organization after her brother, an organ and tissue donor, died in 2006 and his donations saved the lives of five people. Her other Donate Life Connecticut activities include speaking at various venues and events; testifying before the Connecticut Legislature; and creating communications materials for the organization.

Mahon also serves on the Donor Family Advisory Council for LifeChoice Donor Services organ procurement organization; has been a team captain for the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk for the past five years; and was a member of Team Connecticut for the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games.

The HOCC community service award she received is named for Loretta Martinelli, a member of the New Britain General Hospital board of directors until her death in 1996. Martinelli was committed to community service and received numerous awards for her volunteer work. Martinelli awardees receive $100, and the hospital donates $500 to the charity of the recipient’s choice. Mahon chose Donate Life Connecticut, to support the annual high school poster contest ceremony at the Connecticut State Capitol in April 2013.
