Hospital physician receives Petit award
New Britain [June 14 2012] -
The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s William A. Petit, Jr., M.D., Physician Service Award was recently presented to David Krugman, M.D., an honorary Medical Staff member.
Petit presented the award at a June 7 medical staff meeting at the hospital’s New Britain General campus. Krugman’s name is now on a plaque in the campus lobby. The annual award is given to a physician member of the hospital’s medical staff to recognize extraordinary commitment and service to the hospital, the community, the medical staff or patients.
Krugman, a retired Hospital of Central Connecticut pathologist, is a long-time American Red Cross volunteer who continues to help organize the hospital’s blood drives. He is a former chief of Pathology and Blood Bank director at the former New Britain General Hospital, which he joined in 1970 as an attending pathologist. In 2004, he was named the hospital’s interim senior vice president of Medical Affairs.
In 2006, Krugman, then a senior attending in New Britain General’s Pathology Department, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Red Cross Connecticut Blood Services Region. He is an executive board member of the American Red Cross Connecticut Services Region and a former chapter chairman and executive board member, New Britain Chapter, American Red Cross.
Krugman, who has also been a blood donor, later said, “It’s critically important for people to donate so that blood is available for everyone who needs it.” He adds that donations must constantly be replenished.
Krugman earned his medical degree at New York University College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital, New York City; and a pathology residency at Bellevue Hospital and New York University, New York City.
Petit has made numerous contributions to the hospital, serving previously as medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at the hospital and director of the section of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes. He is very active in the community.
The Petit Family Foundation he created to honor the memories of his wife, Jennifer Lynn Hawke-Petit, and their two daughters, Hayley Elizabeth Petit and Michaela Rose Petit, funds programs focused on education, chronic illness and those that support people affected by violence. Nominees for the Physician Service Award embody Petit’s spirit of altruism, commitment and excellence.
