More than 800 enjoy National Cancer Survivors Day event

Southington [June 04 2012] - More than 800 cancer survivors and their loved ones gathered at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington June 3 for The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s 20th annual Cancer Survivors Day breakfast, “Celebrate Life: Build a Dream!” The event was sponsored by the hospital’s George Bray Cancer Center.

Denise Peterson, R.N., M.S., hospital vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer, welcomed the group and commented on the number of people in the room and their “courage and strength”.

The breakfast featured a keynote talk by 25-year cancer survivor Dan Shapiro, Ph.D., a professor of clinical psychology and chair of the Humanities Department at Penn State College of Medicine. Shapiro’s uplifting talk was both lighthearted and poignant, and included vignettes about his cancer experience, his family and his caregivers that frequently had the audience laughing. Besides his professorship, Shapiro is an author, humorist, and television consultant to “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”.

The Survivors Day event also included the Lilly Oncology On Canvas art exhibition with works from people nationwide who have cancer, as well as loved ones, caregivers and healthcare providers.

At the event, the hospital’s cancer center staff recognized cancer survivors and caregivers, and a drawing was held for gift baskets and other prizes donated by hospital employees, local physician practices, patients and area businesses.
