Surgeon Honored for Contributions to Hispanic Community

New Britain [October 29 2008] - Hospital of Central Connecticut surgeon Carlos Barba, M.D., will receive a Latino de Oro 2008 Award Nov. 8 for his contributions to Connecticut’s Hispanic Community in the health field.

Barba, who specializes in bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, is the hospital’s bariatric surgery medical director and a designated Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence surgeon by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

The Latino de Oro awards, created by the Identidad Latina Hispanic newspaper in Hartford, will be presented at the Theater for Performing Arts at the Learning Corridor in Hartford. Identidad Latina started the award in 2005 to recognize Latinos and non-Latinos who make significant contributions in health and other fields, including politics, education, sports, arts and culture and community service.

Weight-loss surgery can help severely obese people lose significant amounts of weight and greatly improve their health. Barba performs gastric bypass surgery, in which part of the stomach is stapled and parts of the small intestine are bypassed. He also performs gastric banding, in which an adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch (vs. using staples to separate the pouch from the rest of the stomach as in bypass). Barba can perform both procedures using minimally-invasive, laparoscopic techniques.

Barba earned his medical degree from the University of Panama, completed his residency at the McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and his fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is board-certified in surgery and is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut has been designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
