New Britain General Hospital Nurse Awarded Lectureship
New Britain [March 30 2006] -
New Britain General Hospital’s nurse coordinator for gynecologic oncology research, Maureen Bracco, APRN, MSN, OCN, has received the Paula Major Memorial Lectureship from the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists (SGNO) for their 2006 Symposium.
The prestigious lectureship is awarded yearly to a gynecologic oncology nurse who is involved in direct patient care, whose presentation reflects an issue or diagnosis related to nursing management of the gynecologic oncology patient.
“In order to fully appreciate the magnitude of this honor,” said Dr. Stephen Grund, director of the hospital’s George Bray Cancer Center, “one needs to realize that Maureen was chosen over nurses throughout the U.S., including those at other major academic medical centers.”
Bracco’s paper, Defining Living: A Grounded Theory Study of Long-Term Ovarian Cancer Survivors©, was her thesis for her master’s degree, which she completed in December 2005. Bracco studied how long-term ovarian cancer survivors (defined as women who have survived five years or more) cope from a behavioral perspective. Since ovarian cancer is usually incurable, survivors must learn to live with their disease. Her key finding was that these women “redefined what living meant to them”… through a fluid process of “filtering, acknowledging the presence, appraising the losses, hoping, and making meaning.”
“Knowing that ovarian cancer patients experience the presence of their disease continually” will help caregivers provide appropriate support, Bracco said.
Bracco, a Plainville resident, is also the nurse coordinator for a regional cooperative study program, which currently has about 35 open trials going on, she said. “These studies offer new hope for women with ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancer,” said Bracco.
