Hospital Of Central Connecticut Nurse Receives Award
New Britain [May 09 2008] -
A Burlington woman has received The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s highest nursing honor for her expertise, compassion and dedication to her patients and colleagues.
Maryann Malsheske, R.N., a nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit at the hospital’s New Britain General campus, received the Viola Larson Memorial Award May 7 at a special ceremony.
Malsheske was one of 14 nurses nominated by their peers for the award, which recognizes clinical expertise, leadership, professional development and compassion and respect for patients and co-workers. Named for the former vice president of nursing, the late Viola Larson, it is the hospital’s highest nursing honor.
A hospital employee for 38 years, Malsheske is a nurse preceptor, mentoring and instructing new nurses. She is a leader on her unit and involved in numerous efforts to develop and enhance nursing procedures and improve patient care.
“Maryann is viewed by her professional colleagues as an extremely valuable team member who possesses expert knowledge of her field, basing her practice on established best standards,” Bridget Wheeler, the hospital’s vice president of Patient Care Services, said in presenting the award. “She consistently comforts anxious patients, staying close, holding their hands in a soft and tender manner.”
“I couldn’t do this without my team,” Malsheske said in accepting the award. “They’re great people to work with.”
The 13 other Viola Larson Award nominees were New Britain General campus RNs: Barbara Amato, Critical Care; Vicki Baxley, Nurseries; Amy Bessette, Ortho/Total Joint/Surgical; Lauren Cragin, Surgical/Bariatrics; Cathy Denuzzio, Critical Care; Gigi Duffy, Labor & Delivery; Elizabeth Lindsey, Inpatient Psychiatry; Nancy Merrow, Ambulatory Surgery Unit/Endoscopy; Stacey Pizzuto, Critical Care; Joan Potash, Outpatient Clinic, Celeste Raboin, Ortho/Total Joint/Surgical; Lynn Seiffert, Emergency Department; and Mary E.
