Hospital Volunteer Efforts Recognized by Diabetes Group
New Britain [February 12 2007] -
Volunteers at The Hospital of Central Connecticut were recognized recently for their contributions by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The ADA honored several hospital employees for their outstanding commitment to raising funds for the diabetes association and diabetes research.
Designated as “Champions for Diabetes” were: Laurence A. Tanner, president and CEO of the hospital; Jean Kostak, manager of education & clinical research for the Joslin Diabetes Affiliate at the hospital; and Patricia O’Connell, Diabetes Nutrition Educator. Tanner served as the honorary chairman of the 2006 ADA Walk for Diabetes, and lead the Joslin High Steppers team. The team was also honored for being the top event fundraiser.
Kostak and O’Connell both received “Outstanding Commitment” Awards and received individual plaques for recruiting walk participants.
On Oct. 22, 2006 about 160 Hospital of Central Connecticut employees, volunteers, and friends participated in America’s Walk for Diabetes in East Hartford. Hospital employees generated $16,500 in donations for the ADA to fund research, education, and advocacy efforts.
“I am proud of our hospital staff and proud to see them recognized for their efforts,” said Tanner. “With so much support, we will make significant advances in prevention and treatment of this disease. At The Hospital of Central Connecticut, we are already seeing advances in the treatment of diabetes that didn’t seem possible even 10 years ago. The walk was a terrific way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the hospital’s affiliation with the Joslin Diabetes Center.”
There are now 20.8 million children and adults in the U.S. with diabetes. It is estimated that between 5 and 10 percent have Type 1 diabetes, while 90 to 95 percent have Type 2 diabetes.
