The objective of surgery for severe obesity is to help individuals lose weight they have been unable to lose using other methods. Bariatric surgery is an option for people whose health and quality of life are being affected by severe obesity.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers gastric banding and gastric bypass surgery. We have been designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
The designation follows a rigorous program review of the hospital's bariatric (weight loss) surgery program by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). With the designation, Medicare will now cover bariatric surgical procedures for qualified patients.
The review encompassed the hospital's surgical weight loss program, surgical outcomes, staff who care for surgical weight loss patients, and facility provisions. Staff members include registered dietitians, behavioral psychologists, nurses, and clinical exercise physiologists. Carlos Barba, M.D., co-medical director of the center's bariatric surgery program, is a designated Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence surgeon.
