Allergy
At the Hospital of Central Connecticut, physicians specializing in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), pulmonology (lungs and respiratory tract), dermatology and other areas work with patients to diagnose allergies and determine the best treatments.
Allergy symptoms can be caused by a variety of triggers found indoors and out, as well as in food, medications and other substances. Allergic reactions occur when the immune system - which serves as defense against potentially dangerous substances - overreacts to a harmless substance (an allergen).
Symptoms can range from sneezing to hives to anaphylaxis - a life-threatening allergic reaction that can include swelling in the throat or tongue and difficulty breathing.
