Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe and disabling brain disorder that can affect the ability to think clearly, manage emotions, distinguish between fantasy and reality, make decisions and relate to others. People with schizophrenia sometimes hear voices others don't hear, believe others are broadcasting their thoughts to the world, or become convinced that others are plotting to harm them.

Symptoms include:
  • A loss of contact with reality (psychosis)
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions (false beliefs)
  • Lack of expression
  • Low motivation
  • Problems with work and social functioning
While there is no cure for schizophrenia, the disease can usually be managed.

Schizophrenia clinical trials at The Hospital of Central Connecticut

The Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Research Center is running a trial for individuals with stable schizophrenia (18-65 years old - does not include Schizoaffective patients) who are currently taking only one of the following:
  • Zyprexa®
  • Risperdal®
  • Risperdal Consta®
  • Invega®
  • Seroquel®
  • Abilify®®
Patients will be given (randomly) AVE1625 (an investigational medication) or placebo over the course of 24 weeks.

The purpose of the study is to test an investigational medication to improve thinking and memory in those taking one of the drugs listed above.

Patients will meet with a research doctor and staff for 18 visits over 35 weeks (initially weekly, then biweekly).

Patients will be compensated for each visit with a $50 gift certificate for their time and effort.
